Developing Agility in a V.U.C.A. World

The acronym “V.U.C.A.” describes the volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity we encounter in our rapidly changing, highly competitive enrollment climate. Learning to navigate in a V.U.C.A. environment requires innovation, creativity, a willingness to engage calculated risk, and a capacity to operate under an ambiguous set of circumstances. In his 2021 book “The Agile College” Nathan Grawe revisits research presented in his 2018 book “Demographics and the Demand for Higher Education” that updates the Higher Education Demand Index (HEDI) and offers a range of examples and discussions of promising practices from institutions who are innovating and navigating the continuously shifting landscape in higher education.  In an environment where the odds of success are unknown and the rules determining the outcomes are unclear, institutions are looking for enrollment experts to step up and lead innovation and creativity on our campuses.  This session explores the V.U.C.A. factors in the current enrollment landscape, recommendations from Grawe’s research, and the innovations that enrollment leaders can engage and initiate across campuses.
